This was a lollipop loop in the Abiquiu Formations near Highways 554 and 84 on the slopes of Sierra Negra. It is a variation of several trips I have done in the area and is the third visit to the tall spires I have called “Gates of Hell”. It turns out there is another feature with the same vernacular name across the highway, out in arroyos near Window Rock so I have started calling this one “Purgatory Gate” instead. The linguistic gymnastics are not necessary, but features of this interest deserve a name, don’t you agree? Of the three, only Window Rock is named on the map. The hikers were myself, Jon Blakey, Nancy King, and Shuhrong. Stats were 7.47 miles, 1577 feet ascent, and a hike time of 5 hours and 24 minutes.
