We went up the Piedra Lisa trail from the Piedra Lisa North trailhead, past Agua Sarca junction and on to the high point on Piedra Lisa. This location has the easiest access to the what I think is the largest face in the Sandias, The Shield. We attempted to head up to the base of the The Shield but went right when we should have gone left. It looked like a big drop of more than we wanted to do so we headed back from there.
We took the Agua Sarca trail back. This trail is worth a hike all on it’s own. It goes down (or up) a creek drainage that is dry most of the year. There are short climbs and pours offs, and a rock art panel at the lower end. Nancy King and SK Lund. 7.73 miles, 2537 feet ascent, 5 hours and 50 minutes.
