We were able to summit Chicoma but not Polvadera. It was pretty clear from the get go that we were going to get rained on. There was already too much momentum so we went for it. By the time we summited around noonish, the thunder had started. Ever seen lightning from the rear when you are facing forward? That’ll put a tingle in ya!

Our route was not the one planned on. I was going to use trail 276 but it  disappeared after the first mile. I doubt there has been any maintenance on it in a long time. Instead we ended up traversing the Southeast slope on the Santa Clara pueblo border fence and then straight up slope. The summit is pretty nice but views take some effort because Chicoma is a big, round mountain that requires you to move down slope to see distant objects. The route we did take had fantastic views of Santa Clara Canyon and the Valle Caldera. You can see the actual track we used with the track we planned in the following link. Red is the one we did, Blue is what we had planned.

Route Map

Because of the long drive ,1 hour 45 minutes from SF with 32 miles of dirt road, you can expect to see this trip listed again as an overnight. There are some nice at-large campsites just off FR144.

I was joined by Daisy, Kevin, and Pat. Our stats were 5.05 miles and 1446 of total climb. It took us 4 hours to complete.

Kevin Stillman would like to come too; he lives up past Bandelier, so would meet us somewhere. Are you going in through the turn-off in Espanola? If so, what time should I tell Kevin to meet us there?

      Gustavo,
Love to have you. You can load a gpx track onto Google Earth by saving the track to a desktop and then opening the track with Google Earth. It only works in computers, not phones or tablets.

  2. Daisy says:

I will be there, and would like to bring my friend Pat. Another friend, Kevin, may come, if thats ok, but has not confirmed yet. Thanks for changing the date! Really looking forward to this hike.
